LactoGen is a RealTime PCR method allowing to identify the polymorphisms responsible for either lactase persistence or non-persistence. It is a single nucleotide transition that occurs upstream of LCT gene, i.e. -13910 C>T.
The method allows to highlight three different genotypes:
• Genotype C/C -13910 entirely associated with lactose genetic intolerance (LNP)
• Genotype C/T -13910 associated with a normal lactase activity (LP)
• Genotype T/T -13910 associated with lactase persistence also in adulthood (LP)
In patients older than 30, the genetic test can be considered as a diagnostic tool and sufficient to determine the presence of hypolactasia.
The genetic test has many advantages if compared with breath hydrogen test
• neither patient preparation nor time commitment
• no problems due to lactose intake
• extremely rapid test time
• no logistic organization required for patient’s reception
• reduced number of dedicated people
• absolute sensitivity and specificity
• ability to differentiate between primary or secondary lactase deficiency
